Introduction to Graphic Design
In today's world, Graphic Design is present on almost everything that we see. Design is the crux of every possible industry. We can find the application of graphic design ranging from a small toffee wrapper to a sophisticated machines or automobile industry.
What is Graphic Design?
Graphic Design is the profession of creating elements of visualized information and ideas by using technological tools as well as artistic creativity. It primarily deals with conceptualization of ideas with images and typography and communicate a message or a meaning to the beholder. This profession requires creativity, logic, problem solving skills and in-depth knowledge on technology.
The term 'Graphic Design' was coined by the outstanding book designer William Addison Dwiggins. According to him, its definition states that
"Since prehistoric times, people have searched for ways to give visual form to ideas and concepts, to store knowledge in graphic form, and to bring order and clarity to information. Over the course of history, these needs have been filled by various people including scribes, printers, and artists. It was not until 1922, when the term ‘graphic design’ was coined to describe his activities as an individual who brought structural order and visual form to printed communications, that an emerging profession received an appropriate name."
Classification of Graphic Design
The main elements of graphic design are images and typography. It can be broadly classified as:
- Image based Design - Images developed by the designers represents a process or conveys a message to the targeted customers. Images are incredible tools for communication. They can be painted, drawn, digitally framed or photographic.
- Type based Design - In this type of design the designers first analyzes the audience and the message to be conveyed. And then they use appropriate words which ideally fits that context and on seeing which the audience identifies the brand name or the product or the message.
- Combined Image and Type Design - Designers blend the images and typography invariably and creates a visual pun.
Scope of Graphic Design
Different spectrums of design applications are:
- Media and Entertainment
- Multimedia Projects
- Designing logos, brochures, postures, pamphlets, business cards, newsletters and so on.
As the technology is constantly evolving and computer graphics is advancing to boarder range, there are enormous job opportunities for the designers in this field. And there seems to have an exponential rise for the need of graphic designers over the coming years. It would be lucrative and wise for the aspiring designers to get professionally trained. Statistics shows that there are currently around 250,000 graphic designers in the US and 75% of them have a remarkable regular salary while others are freelance designers.
